What is the supercontinent Pangea?

　今から三億年ほど前の、石器紀、二畳紀には、地球上の大陸がすべて陸続きになっていて、一つの超大陸を作っていたという。その名を、パンゲア（ Pangaea ）と呼んだ。三畳紀、ジェラ紀、すなわち今から二億年前に、これらの大陸が離れ離れになって移動をはじめ、大陸は現在の配置になったという。一般に超大陸という用語は、現在存在する大陸から構成される広大な陸地を参照するために使用されている。そのような広大な陸地は、大陸移動説によると、約4億年から5億年ごとに形成、あるいは破壊されることになる。大西洋をはさむ両側の大陸は海岸線の形だけでなく動植物の分布や、地質構造などもよく似ている。このことからも、大陸は一つにくっついていて、その後に、分裂して移動していたことの説明がつく。さらに人類の祖先達も各大陸に移動し、ネグロイドは南に、コーカソイドは西へ、モンゴロイドは東へ移動できたことが説明される。この大陸移動説は、ドイツの気象学者、ウェゲナー ( A. Wegener ) によって発表された。 ひとつの大陸に皆が集うイメージで本WEBサイト名を「PANGAEA」と銘々した。
